Electric Guitar
The electric guitar has a lot of similarities when compared to the acoustic guitar. The major difference being that MOST electric guitars have a solid body and not hollow one. This is because electric guitars are made to be played through amplifiers and not to be played acoustically.
The body of an electric guitar is usually smaller than that of an acoustic. It will have 'pick-ups' where the sound hole usually is on an acoustic. The purpose of the pick-ups is to do exactly that, pick up the sound being played on the strings and push it through the amplifier. Other than that the body of the electric may have a few switches and knobs on it, these are just for sound control and volume. You can play around with these to come up with a sound that you enjoy.
The electric guitar really came about because guitar players simply needed more volume out of their guitars. When acoustic guitars were playing with big bands they were just getting buried in the mix. Necessity is the mother of all invention so now we have the world's most famous instrument. The electric guitar!
