Guitar Bar Chords
Bar chords are very important for guitar players to know how to play. They can be difficult at first but once you have them down the advantages of knowing them are huge.
The “bar” in a bar chord is made by laying one of the fingers, usually the first finger, over multiple strings. Most guitar players have a hard time making this bar at first because it takes quite a bit of strength for the finger that is making the bar.
Some players give up because they can’t make great sounding bar chords within the first few weeks of trying. Don’t let that be you. If you get frustrated keep going and keep practicing. It takes time to build up the strength in your fingers. Keep practicing and the great sounding bar chords will come.
Take a look at this bar chord video lesson for some tips on how to make bar chords and strengthen your fingers. There are some chord diagrams for the chords used in this lesson. The solid black “bar” on the chord diagram represents the bar that you should make over multiple strings in order to create your bar chords.
This video teaches two bar chord shapes. The first one is based on the open E major chord shape with the root note on the sixth string. The second one is based on the open A major chord shape with the root note on the fifth string.
Once you have these bar chords down a whole new world of playing will open up for you. Practice hard and try not to get frustrated if your bar chords don’t sound perfect at first.
