Guitar Finger Picking

AcousticFinger picking is a technique that every guitar player should be familiar with or at least try once. Finger picking is when you use your thumb and fingers to pick the notes on the guitar instead of a pick or plectrum. No matter what kind of music you play, finger picking can be a very useful way to play the guiar.

The guitar lesson video for this lesson will give you a basic finger picking pattern that you can use with just about any chord you like. The chords that are used in this specific example are a A major, D major, E major and F# minor. If you don’t know these chords you can take some time to learn them from the chord diagrams below.

Once you have the chord shapes down you can apply the finger picking pattern to them. The pattern uses the thumb, first, second and third fingers on the picking hand. You will play the bass notes with your thumb and the higher notes with your first, second and third fingers.

Make sure to relax and try to be aware of any excess tension and your right and left hands. Take it slow enough for all of the notes to sound clean and in time.
