Guitar Scale Sequencing

Guitar scale sequencing is when you take a pattern of notes and simply repeat them throughout a scale. Scale sequences are used to help create melodic lines in your playing. They are also great for developing dexterity and strength in your hands.

In this guitar lesson you will learn how to sequence a major scale in groups of three notes. This is one of the more basic and overused sequences but it is great for learning what a scale sequence is and how to create your own sequences.

We will be using the A major scale shape that is represented in the scale diagram below. If you do not know this shape you can take some time to learn it before trying out the sequence that we will be learning.

Start off on the lowest note of the A major scale. Play that note and then the next two notes of the scale.  That’s three notes. Now start on the second lowest note of the scale and play that note plus the next two notes. That’s three more notes. Starting to get the idea? Now start on the third lowest note and play three notes. Continue this pattern, or sequence, all the way up the scale.

Guitar Scale Sequence

This may feel a bit strange or foreign at first but you will get used to it after some time. Practice it slowly at first especially if you are picking every note.  There is a lot of hopping between strings when you play sequences like this. That can make it difficult to keep your playing clean.

You will hear playing like this a lot in rock, fusion, metal and even some pop. If you like the sound that scale sequencing gives you check out these additional sequencing guitar lessons.
